Testosterone has an enormous importance for a man, firstly because of its sexual function, secondly its role in the built of the body, and finally, reducing risks of developing heart diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure and fat in the blood.
It is recommended for every man to naturally increase the level of testosterone in his body.
There are, however, some situations in which the Testosterone Replacement Therapy is needed.
Testosterone Replacement Therapy enables reaching higher levels of testosterone (TST) in the blood. Such therapy is necessary with people who have a pathologically low level of TST. This happens in case of some diseases:
- an injury, an infection, or loss of a testicle / testicles
- certain genetic disorders (e.g. Klinefelter syndrome)
- haemochromatosis (iron overload)
- dysfunction of the pituitary gland
- stress
- alcoholism
- overweight
The symptoms of low testosterone level can be the following:
- weaker sexual desire
- erectile dysfunction
- impotence
- bad mood
- poor concentration
- muscle reduction
- bone density reduction
- overweight
- high blood pressure
- diabetes
- high levels of fat in the blood
Testosterone replacement therapy demands a thorough examination by a specialist. It is a therapy which must not be used unassisted as different complications are possible. Before starting the therapy it is necessary to do certain tests and examinations so as to establish if the testosterone replacement therapy is justified and whether the therapy may be started at all. There are some contraindications for using testosterone. One of them is previously diagnosed prostate cancer.
It is important to understand that testosterone DOES NOT cause prostate cancer in people who don't have it. However, in people who were diagnosed with prostate cancer, testosterone must not be used.
There are several ways of intaking testosterone: injections, tablets, gels, etc.
Dosage and use are prescribed by the specialist. He will also do regular check-ups because, although testosterone replacement therapy rarely causes any kind of complications, they can still appear (e.g. the increase of hematocrit). Generally speaking, when conducted under the supervision of a specialist, testosterone replacement therapy is very safe to health.
Yet, testosterone replacement therapy has its drawbacks. The main downside is blocking natural production of testosterone in the system. Testosterone is produced in testicles. Because of this, testicles become smaller and softer. Considering the blockage of the natural production, when the testosterone replacement therapy is over, there is even greater drop of testosterone level in the blood than it was at the beginning of the therapy.
So, once testosterone replacement therapy is started, one should expect a long-lasting treatment with it.
Another important point is that testosterone replacement therapy doesn't give fast results - on the contrary. The improvements of sexual function are visible after 3-12 weeks, body recomposition (reduction of fat and increase of muscle mass) after 12-52 weeks, and to increase bone density it takes as much as three years.
Hence, testosterone replacement therapy is extremely useful but only in well justified cases and when conducted under the supervision of a specialist.
On the other hand, natural increase of testosterone is strongly advisable for every man, it is safe to health and doesn't require doctor's supervision!
